Sioux City Police/DEA Drug Take-Back Day on 4/26
On Saturday April 26th 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the Sioux City Police Department will be partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration for the spring National Prescription Drug take-back. This program was instituted by the D.E.A. to provide an opportunity for millions of Americans to turn in their unused, unneeded or expired prescription medications. Expired prescription medications are a public safety issue, often leading to accidental poisoning, overdose and abuse. This is a free service and no questions will be asked of persons turning in medication. The Six Sioux City locations for this event will be the downtown Walgreens 100 Pierce Street, Target Store 5775 Sunnybrook Drive, Southern Hills Mall Hy-Vee Store 4500 Sergeant Road, West side Fareway Store 4040 War Eagle Drive, Floyd Blvd. Wal Mart Store 3101 Floyd Blvd and Hy-Vee 2827 Hamilton Blvd. Officers will be manning collection sites where tablets, capsules and all other solid dosage forms of medication will be accepted. The event runs from 10 am to 2pm only, please do not attempt to bring in medication to the sponsoring locations prior-to or after the event. According to the 2008 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, The non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most prevalent category of drug abuse in the United States. 2008 Surveys also showed that the majority of teenagers using prescription drugs got them from family and friends, including from their home medicine cabinets. Recent EPA studies have detected pharmaceutical drugs in varying concentrations in our nation’s water supplies; so safe disposal is preferable to flushing medication down the toilet.
