Jefferson Parish held 21 murder jury trials last year, eight short of record
For Jefferson Parish, 2011 remains the record-setting year for murder trials In early 2012, after a record-setting year for prosecuting murder defendants at the Jefferson Parish Courthouse, the district attorney's office credited its working relationships with police, judges and even defense attorneys. Jurisdictions that lack such ties, District Attorney Paul Connick Jr. said at the time, are not effective. His comments came after his office prosecuted 29 murder cases at the 24th Judicial District Court in 2011, more than any other year in Jefferson Parish history. The District Court in Gretna has not surpassed the 2011 pace since then, according to newly released statistics. But Connick, who is seeking re-election this year, says his office still maintains those relations.'We continue to focus on serious, violent crime,' Connick said. 'We have worked hand-in-hand with our partners at the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, and with all of our law enforcement partners in maintaining a better than 90-percent conviction rate on violent offenders who choose to go to trial on violent homicide cases.'Last year, 21 murder cases involving 24 defendants were prosecuted before juries in the District Court, according the district attorney's jury trial statistics for the past four years. Juries found 19 of those defendants guilty charged of second-degree murder, leading judges to hand down mandatory life sentences in prison.Three defendants were convicted of lesser charges, and two were found not guilty. Two defendants pleaded guilty after juries were seated in their trials. There were no mistrials. In 2012, Jefferson Parish juries also heard 21 murder trials, but involving 21 defendants. Of them, 12 were convicted as charged, while three were convicted of lesser charges. Two were acquitted, and one pleaded guilty after the jury was seated. There were three mistrials.District Attorney Paul Connick Jr. So far in 2014, six juries have been seated to consider second-degree murder cases, resulting in four defendants being convicted as charged. One defendant, Timmie Reed, pleaded guilty to manslaughter for killing a 3-year-old boy after his trial began this week, while 70-year-old Dora Adair of Marrero was found guilty of negligent homicide in the death of her husband. At least 55 defendants await trials on charges of second-degree murder, according to data provided by the clerk of court office. So far this year, grand juries have handed up indictments charging nine people with second-degree murder. An overall jury trial snapshot for the past four years shows:In 2013, 87 jury trials involving 93 defendants were prosecuted. Fifty defendants were convicted as charged, 10 were convicted of lesser charges, 11 were acquitted, 18 pleaded guilty after juries were seated, and four ended in mistrials. In 2012, 75 jury trials involving 75 defendants were held. Of them, 38 defendants were convicted as charged, 11 were convicted of lesser charges, 12 were acquitted and eight pleaded guilty after juries were seated. There were six mistrials. In 2011, 104 jury trials involving 109 defendants were held. Of them, 63 defendants were convicted as charged, 11 were convicted of lesser charges, 16 were acquitted and six pleaded guilty as charged. There were 13 mistrials. In 2010, 105 jury trials were held, involving 108 defendants. Sixty of those defendants were convicted as charged, 10 were convicted of lesser charges, 18 were acquitted and 18 pleaded guilty after juries were seated. There were two mistrials that year.

Metairie man indicted on federal charges involving sex trafficking of minor
A Metairie man was charged in a three-count federal indictment handed down Thursday for his role in the sex trafficking of a 16-year-old Mississippi girl prosecutors say was being groomed to work as a French Quarter prostitute. A Metairie man was charged in a three-count federal indictment Thursday that accuses him of orchestrating the sex trafficking of a 16-year-old Mississippi girl who prosecutors say was being groomed to work as a French Quarter prostitute. If convicted, Torrey Ledell Davis, 42, is facing a mandatory prison term of 10 years to life, United States Attorney Kenneth Polite Jr. announced. It was not clear whether Davis had been arrested, but he was not in custody at Orleans Parish Prison as of Thursday night.Davis is accused of driving the teen in November 2012 from a hotel in Jackson to his Jefferson Parish home, where investigators say he drugged the girl, took sexually suggestive photographs of her, then arranged for her to be trained by a woman who worked as a prostitute for Davis. The indictment says Davis stored illicit photos of the underage girl on his laptop computer, and used them to create online advertisements for prostitution. Prosecutors said that on Nov. 26, 2012, Davis sent the woman and girl to work as prostitutes in the French Quarter, where they were arrested by an undercover officer who had arranged to pay $500 for a sexual act involving the teen. The woman was not named in the federal indictment announcement. But 25-year-old Emilie 'Bunny' Cook of Metairie was arrested by Louisiana State Police that same night in the 300 block of Bourbon Street, booked with trafficking of children for sex purposes after arranging for her and a 16-year-old girl to perform oral sex for $500 on a man who turned out to be an undercover NOPD detective. The underage girl told police she was a runaway from Jackson, Miss.Cook is free on a $15,000 bond while awaiting trial. Court records show her state trial was continued on Wednesday until May 27.Police records from that arrest said the teen girl was remanded to the custody of NOPD's Juvenile Division, where she was booked on prostitution under the age of 17, a curfew violation and being a runaway. The disposition of her case was not immediately known.A spokeswoman for Polite said the case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 to combat instances of child sexual exploitation and abuse. She said Davis' case will be prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jordan Ginsberg.

18-pound bag of marijuana washes ashore in Grand Isle

Grand Isle police are working with the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office to determine how the bag found its way to the Jefferson Parish beach. 'We can only speculate as to where it came from and how it got to be there,' said Deputy Brennan Matherne, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office. 'It seems logical that someone could have discarded it from a ship or vessel.'Tracking the package could prove difficult. The tosser could have been a few yards or a few miles from shore.'We're going to do the best we can to determine where the bag came from,' he said. In the meantime, Matherne said the Sheriff's Office's Water Patrol Section and the Port Fourchon Harbor Patrol have stepped up patrols along the coastline.
