Police allege jealous Bay City man shoots dog with BB gun, punches and chokes girlfriend
Police are saying that a Bay City man, off parole for fewer than four months, was motivated by his jealousy of a pet to break his girlfriend'€™s nose, choke her and shoot her dog with a BB gun. View full sizeJoshua J. WoodmanBAY CITY, MI — Police are saying that a Bay City man, off parole for fewer than four months, was motivated by his jealousy of a pet to break his girlfriend'€™s nose, choke her and shoot her dog with a BB gun. In the early morning of Tuesday, July 23, police responded to McLaren Bay Region hospital to speak with 25-year-old Holli L. Yax, who was receiving treatment for injuries she said she suffered in a domestic assault. Yax told officers she has been living with her boyfriend, Joshua J. Woodman, for two years and that earlier that night, they had been lying in bed with their 2-year-old white pit bull mix Bubba. 'Joshua was trying to play with Bubba, but Bubba wasn'€™t playing back,' Yax told officers, according to court records. '€œHe then got mad and started kicking Bubba.'€Yax said she got Bubba off the bed, and Woodman yelled at her for defending the dog. Woodman kicked over a lamp and started punching Bubba in the face, Yax told police. Yax tried shielding her dog from Woodman.'€œWhen I did this, Joshua grabbed his BB gun and said he wanted Bubba to die,' Yax said. Woodman started shooting at Bubba, and some of the BBs struck the dog, Yax said.Yax led Bubba out of the room. Woodman pursued her, grabbed her by the hair and punched her in the nose, she told police. He then grabbed her neck and choked her, lifting her off her feet, and bit her ring finger, she said. Speaking to a Bay City Times/MLive.com reporter, Yax said that as this was going on, Bubba began barking and causing a general ruckus, distracting Woodman.Woodman eventually ceased and then helped Yax to the kitchen to help clean blood off her, she said. Yax said she wanted to call her mother, but Woodman told her he was worried she would call the police. Yax eventually left to visit the ER for treatment of her broken nose. Woodman tried accompanying her, but when he walked outside their apartment, a neighbor confronted him about Yax'€™s broken nose, she said. While this was happening, Yax said, she got in her car and drove to the hospital.Woodman, 36, is charged with assault by strangulation, a 10-year felony, killing or torturing an animal, a four-year felony, and misdemeanor domestic violence. His bond is set at $100,000 cash-surety.Yax told police Woodman repeatedly abuses her and threatens to kill her and her family. She said she never reported the abuse to police before. While Yax was at the hospital, other officers arrested Woodman. Woodman told officers he and Yax had an argument over their dog, but that she left and he didn'€™t know where she went. '€œI was yelling at the dog to get off the bed, but it wouldn't (expletive) listen,'€ Woodman told police. 'I was getting (expletive) because my girl wouldn't tell the dog to get off the (expletive) bed. Finally, I kicked the (expletive) off the bed.'€He said Bubba growled and tried to bite him. Yax then ran out of the house, and Woodman didn'€™t know why, he said. Woodman'€™s two BB guns were gone, and bloodstains were not visible. Several BBs were on the bedroom floor, court records show.Bubba bore two small red marks on his skin that appeared to be fresh, court records show. The marks had dried blood on them, court records show. When asked by officers about Yax's injuries, Woodman said he didn'€™t know how she suffered them. He said he punched the dog twice but did not shoot it or assault Yax.Woodman has served prison time on at least eight felony convictions. He was first sentenced to serve one to four years on two counts of larceny in a building in Iosco County in June 1995. In 1998, a Bay County judge sentenced him to two to eight years on two counts of felony firearm and single counts of discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle and assault with a dangerous weapon. In 2004, a Bay County judge sentenced him to 42 months to 14 years in prison on counts of possessing and promoting child sexually abusive material. The Michigan Department of Corrections discharged Woodman from parole on April 19, 2013.Woodman is to appear for a preliminary examination before Bay County Chief District Judge Timothy J. Kelly at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6. The court has appointed attorney Kenneth Malkin to represent Woodman. Malkin said said Friday that he has not yet been able to meet with his client and had no further comment. Yax, again speaking to The Times, said she credits Bubba with saving her life.'We got the dog because he was abused, and an abused dog saved me that night,' she said.
