Saginaw ex-con charged with sexually assaulting, threatening Bay City 14-year-old
Authorities in Bay County are alleging a 28-year-old Saginaw man raped a teenage girl, then threatened to kill her. Abraham A. RosalesBAY CITY, MI — Authorities in Bay County are alleging a 28-year-old Saginaw man raped a teenage girl, then threatened to kill her.Bay County District Judge Mark E. Janer on Wednesday, April 16, arraigned Abraham A. Rosales, also known as Abraham McCombs, on single counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct with a victim between the ages of 13 and 15 and extortion. The former charge is a 15-year felony, while the latter carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.According to court records, a 14-year-old girl in an April 4 interview at the Nathan Weidner Children’s Advocacy Center said that a man she referred to as “Peeps” picked her up from a Bay City home. He took her to a local party store, bought her some food, then drove her back to the residence from which he picked her up.Parked in a car near the residence, the man began kissing the girl and then had sex with her, the girl said. Afterward, the man told her he would kill her if she told anyone, the girl said.Police, who identified 'Peeps' as Rosales, later interviewed him. Rosales initially denied even knowing the girl, but when confronted with more information, said he did have consensual sex with her. Rosales said he thought the girl was 17, court records show.At his arraignment, Janer set Rosales’ bond at $200,000 cash-surety. He is to appear for a preliminary examination before District Judge Dawn A. Klida at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 30.Rosales was discharged from prison in July 2013. In August 2004, a Saginaw County judge sentenced him to 18 months to 10 years after he pleaded guilty to assault with intent to cause great bodily harm less than murder. Rosales pleaded no contest to the same charge in Isabella County in connection with an incident that occurred on Aug. 9, 2006. He was subsequently sentenced to 40 months to 15 years in prison on Jan. 8, 2007.

Fire destroys Baumann's Superette store in Isabella County
A fire on the evening of Wednesday, Jan. 22, destroyed Baumann's Superette, 4130 E. Rosebush, according to a spectator at the location. ROSEBUSH, MI — A Central Michigan University student was among the spectators watching as firefighters tried to save a grocery store engulfed in flames. The fire began after 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, when fire tucks converged on Baumann's Superette, 4130 E. Rosebush, witnesses at the location said. Baumann's Superette, formerly known as IGA, was declared a total loss later that night, Isabella Northeast Fire Chief Matt Kampf told the Morning Sun. Officials of the part-time department were not immediately available to provide additional information. CMU junior Evanne Lehrke told The Saginaw News she lives within sight of the fire and heard sirens as firefighters responded. Through the window of her home she saw smoke rising in the air and thought a nearby nursing home was burning until she walked outside and saw the grocery store on fire. 'The entire road was blocked by firefighters from surrounding areas, and there were multiple firemen and women. Tank trucks kept coming and going past my house to retrieve more water and help,' Lehrke said. She stayed outside for about a half hour and watched as motorists slowed to see the fire. Dozens of people stood by as flames and smoke continued to pour from the building. 'The smoke was rolling and so thick I could only see the two firemen in front, so they were my main subjects,' said Lehrke, who took pictures. 'As I was walking home, a large ladder truck drove past. I watched from my window as firemen went up in the bucket with a large hose and sprayed down on the building remains.'Rosebush is a town of 368 people, according to the 2010 U.S. Census, located north of Mount Pleasant in Isabella Township. — Brad Devereaux is a public safety reporter for MLive/The Saginaw News.
