CFCC's retired research vessel finds new home
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Cape Fear Community College's retired research vessel has found a new home in Charleston, SC. For the first time in over 32 years, the research vessel Dan Moore left the Cape Fear Community College dock without any CFCC crew or students aboard. The 85-foot ship was sold by the college last month and the new owners took over the vessel this afternoon. Used to provide offshore training for students in CFCC's Marine Technology program for more than three decades, the R/V Dan Moore was retired after the college purchased a newer and larger ship, R/V Cape Hatteras, last February. Built in 1968, the R/V Dan Moore was sold at a state-managed auction on Ebay on Dec 9. The winning bid was $45,600. Proceeds from the sale will be used by the college for future equipment needs. The ship was purchased by Black Water Divers based in Charleston, SC. The company specializes in commercial salvage and treasure hunting. A small group of CFCC Marine Technology crew and students were on hand to help the Black Water Divers crew get ready for departure and watched as the Dan Moore cruised out of sight down the Cape Fear River. College officials said that they were pleased to see that the ship would have a career after CFCC and they look forward to reading about her future exploits. Since 1982, the R/V Dan Moore has taken over 1,500 CFCC students on 419 training voyages for a total of 2,500 days at sea. While at CFCC, the ship traveled over 240,000 miles to ports as far north as Portland, Maine and as far south as the Bahamas. The last voyage of the ship for the college was especially historic as students helped lift two 300-year old cannons from the shipwreck of Blackbeard's flagship, the Queen Anne's Revenge. Training voyages aboard the college's current research vessel, the R/V Cape Hatteras, began last fall and will continue starting next month.
