Winter storm warning issued for Akron area
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Akron area, with 6 to 10 inches of snow predicted for the region. The warning is in effect from Tuesday evening through late Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service in Cleveland predicts the snow will begin falling in Akron around 8 p.m. Tuesday. “The heaviest snow will occur about two hours after the snow begins and last about nine hours,” according to the advisory. “Most of the accumulation will occur by mid-morning on Wednesday.” Travel is expected to be hazardous during the storm, the weather service said, as blowing and drifting snow could reduce visibility to one-quarter of a mile at times with winds ranging from 10 to 20 mph. Accuweather is predicting 4 to 8 inches of snow in Akron with sleet mixing in early Wednesday morning. Far southern and southeastern Ohio had to contend with a separate winter storm Sunday night into Monday afternoon. Ohio University in Athens and Shawnee State University in Portsmouth canceled classes Monday, and some government offices closed. Kim Carver, director of the Scioto County Emergency Management Agency in Portsmouth, said numerous traffic accidents were reported, although none appeared serious. “It was mostly bent fenders and hurt feelings,” said Carver, who estimated the area received about 8 to 10 inches. The Skyline Family Restaurant at the Greater Portsmouth Regional Airport in Minford closed. “We didn’t want our employees risking their lives,” said co-owner Tammy Blackburn. She said she and her husband went in only to accept a delivery. “We have a four-wheel drive, but the roads were terrible with ice and snow,” Blackburn said. “People are ready for this winter to be over. It’s been really tough on businesses, and it’s cut into employees’ hours.” Bill Schneider, from Beaver in nearby Pike County, stopped by the restaurant for coffee after clearing off some neighbors’ driveways. “This was the biggest snow we’ve had this year,” said Schneider, who had about 8 inches at his home. “They are working on the roads, but they’re still icy.” An auto parts store employee in Athens said that area received 7 to 10 inches. “People are getting out and about, but the roads are still covered with snow,” AutoZone employee Jared Hill said. He said most customers were buying wiper blades. “It was batteries mostly last week because of the cold,” he said, referring to subzero temperatures that hit Ohio the past few weeks. The snow had ended over the state by early afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington. But Ohio won’t get much of a respite, with the new storm expected to move in Tuesday. Forecasters expect the heaviest snow probably will be in the Akron area with southern Ohio possibly getting rain or snow mixed with rain or freezing rain. “Wednesday morning will be dicey for travel in some areas,” meteorologist John Franks said.
