Students see living history at Bay City's River of Time encampment
On Saturday and Sunday, the festival opens to the public. Events include Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, Colonial and Civil War skirmishes, and a World War II plane flyover. Admission is free although donations are accepted. BAY CITY, MI —Mountain men, Continental Army soldiers and a Vietnam War veteran greeted hundreds of students who made their way into Bay City's Veterans Memorial Park on Friday, Sept. 27.The unusual greeters are part of the River of Time Living History Encampment taking place through Sunday, Sept. 29.Jan Rau, the event's chief organizer, said the weekend's programming is a chance for area residents to learn more about the past. 'This is a thing where people of all ages, especially students, can come and ask questions they have about any time period...we wouldn't have what we have today without what these people did,' she said. Friday was a day for student field trips at River of Time. Eight school districts from around the Great Lakes Bay Region brought about 1,000 children to see the encampment. Fred Priebe, a Belleville resident playing the part of Abraham Lincoln, said the children were getting something they couldn't find in a textbook. 'They walk away feeling like they've been there,' he said. 'You can't get that from school.' Madison Webster, 11, a 6th grader at T.L. Handy Middle School, was one of the students excited to come out and see the day, and said she was most enthusiastic to hear actors speak on medical history. 'I was really excited to see that,' she said noting that when she grows up, she hopes to be a nurse. 'And I loved hearing about what they did in back in the day if they got wounded.'On Saturday and Sunday, the festival opens to the public. Events include Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, Colonial and Civil War skirmishes, and a World War II plane flyover. Admission is free although donations are accepted. Rau said she expects favorable weather to draw around 30,000 people to Veterans Memorial Park. If they only can remember one thing from the weekend, she said, she hopes it's to treasure their history.
