Feds accuse Great Kills man of seeking out, sharing child pornography
Daniel Mule, 25, downloaded and shared videos online of young girls have sex with adults, authorities allege. Daniel Mule, 25, of Great Kills, faces federal charges after a Homeland Security probe revealed he was downloading and sharing child pornography online, prosecutors allege. STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- He used search terms like “Lolita” and “Vicki” to find videos of young girls being sexually abused and victimized on cameras, then helped keep those videos in circulation by sharing them on an Internet service, prosecutors allege. A Great Kills man now faces federal child pornography charges – and the prospect of up to 20 years in prison – for keeping and sharing the videos on a computer in the home he shares with his mother, according to federal authorities.Daniel Mule, 25, of the 400 block of O’Gorman Avenue, found himself on the radar of  Homeland Security Investigations agent who was looking for people actively sharing child pornography in New York, according to a complaint filed in Brooklyn Federal Court. The agent was looking at “peer to peer” networks, and that probe revealed an Internet Protocol, or IP, address, sharing child porn between May 9, 2012 and May 5, 2013, the complaint alleges. The videos depicted prepubescent females involved in sexual activities with adult males, prosecutors allege.Investigators tracked the IP address to a home where Mule and his mother live, according to the complaint, and on Sept. 9, authorities executed a search warrant, finding SD cards with similar videos on Mule’s bedside table. Two of the videos on the SD cards showed children who had been identified by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, federal authorities allege.Mule admitted that he downloaded the videos with a peer-to-peer program, the complaint alleges.“Mule had an interest in teen/adult/young girls/young people and used search terms such as ‘Lolita’ and ‘Vicki’ to search for child pornography,” the complaint reads.'Lolita' may be a reference to the 1955 Vladimir Nabokov novel of the same name, which tells the story of a 12-year-old girl who becomes sexually involved with her stepfather.Child pornography videos are often traded and collected by name, and in a case that’s been presented to the U.S. Supreme Court, the victims in the so-called “Amy” and “Vicky” series, have sought financial restitution from people who continue to trade their videos and images online. The victim in the Vicky case was sexually abused by her father more than 10 years ago, in “made to order” acts that were recorded and traded, according to her attorney. She’s given victim impact statements as an adult in child pornography cases, describing the psychological impact of the videos’ continued circulation.Though one of the videos downloaded by Mule refers to “Vicky” in its title, federal prosecutors couldn’t say Tuesday if the name refers to the same victim in the U.S. Supreme Court case.Michelle Collins, the vice president of the Center for Missing and Exploited Children's exploited children division, said that the constant sharing of child pornography can lead to paranoia and continued trauma for the young victims in the years and decades that follow.'Child pornography images and videos are crime scene photos, crime scene videos. It's the video memorialization of a child being sexually assaulted,' she said. 'Countless unknown people are downloading the images for sexual gratification... They are feeding into the market, they are further victimizing the child depicted in the image or video.'Mule was arraigned Friday before Magistrate Judge Marilyn D. Go. He was released after his mother put up her house to secure his $100,000 bond, public records show.Heidi Cesare of Federal Defenders NY, Mule’s court-appointed defense lawyer, said neither she nor her client would comment on the case. His arraignment came the same day the NYPD arrested two Staten Island men on child pornography charges. Their cases are currently being handled in Stapleton Criminal Court.
