Study OK’d to assess Dunkirk fire stations
DUNKIRK – Fire stations throughout the city will be studied for the cost and priority of renovations. The Common Council voted unanimously Tuesday to hire Pacheco Ross Architects of Voorheesville for the study at a cost of up to $29,000. Repairs and possible consolidation of the city’s three fire stations have been discussed for years. Fire Chief Keith Ahlstrom had recommended that the Council hire an outside service to compile a list of repairs and cost estimates for them. In another matter, Mayor A.J. Dolce said he plans to bring more duties to the Youth Board, including recreational activity planning and development for the city. The mayor appointed several people to the board for three-year terms. Public Works Director Tony Gugino acknowledged that some of the road surfaces that had partial paving done in the spring have suffered damage in the winter temperatures. He said streets that were only partially completed last fall because of changes in the weather would be on the agenda for repairs early in the spring when a top coat would be applied. Gugino said his department plans an aggressive schedule of paving and street repairs for many neighborhoods.Gugino also reported that the work to bring the city’s wastewater treatment facility into compliance is progressing on schedule. He said the next phase in the project is expected to be done in the spring. The STC Construction company of Springville was awarded a contract for $1.62 million to replace seven filters at the plant and to renovate and replace valves and piping. Planning Director Steve Neratko said he will start the planning phases to improve the former Al Tech Specialty Steel building site on Brigham Road for future use. The city will use a $300,000 grant for the project and will focus on the site and neighborhood immediately surrounding the former steel plant. Neratko also reported that artist’s drawings of what Routes 5 and 60 could look like with a “complete streets” planning appeal will be posted for public review. He said the drawings depict the area with larger pedestrian areas and more space for bicycle riders. The drawings will be posted in City Hall and on the city’s website.
