On May 26, 2014, at 10:41 pm, Morganton Public Safety responded to a 911 call at Fatz Café, 2111 South Sterling St.  It was reported a white male approached employees of the restaurant near the back door and pointed a gun at them.  The employees were led at gunpoint into the restaurant and to the back office.  The offender, later identified as Scottie James Hill, was described as wearing a gray shirt wrapped around his head and sunglasses.  Hill was wearing work gloves and a blue hoodie.  An employee noticed details of the gun that indicated it was an air-soft gun.  When Hill attempted to leave, employees grabbed him and held him until police arrived.  Hill was charged with Attempted Armed Robbery and one count of Second Degree Kidnapping.  Additional charges are pending and investigators are looking at other recent robberies in the area to connect to Hill.  Investigators have found there are similar armed robberies in Lenoir, Hickory, Caldwell County and Catawba County.  The Criminal Investigations Division is working with other law enforcement agencies to verify or connect these robberies. They are also looking at the recent robbery of the Marquee Cinema in Morganton that occurred on May 6, 2014. • Traffic Stop Leads to Foot Chase and Meth Arrest

A foot chase ended quickly when a suspect was tased.  Sergeant J. R. Whisnant was in the area of North Green Street looking for a dark colored Jeep Cherokee that had been reported by NCSHP as a suspected impaired driver.  Sergeant Whisnant located the vehicle on North Green Street and began to observe the driving.    After a short distance, a traffic stop was conducted.  A passenger in the Jeep was displaying overly nervous behavior in the presence of law enforcement (his entire body was shaking-minimal eye contact)   Once additional officers arrived on scene, the passenger was identified as Mark Russell Triplett-53yoa.  A records check from the officers MDT- Mobile Data Terminal provided officers with instant, investigative information on Triplett.  Officers discovered that Triplett has been arrested on 3 occasions in the past two years for possession/manufacturing-with the intent to sell/deliver methamphetamine.  Two counts of possession/manufacturing/selling methamphetamine are currently pending in Caldwell County.    Officers began to ask Triplett questions about any substances he may be in possession of.  During an attempted pat down, Triplett fled across Hwy 181 North and down an embankment.  During foot pursuit, the Taser was used successfully to stop Triplett from fleeing.  Triplett continued to resist arrest for a brief period following the foot pursuit.      While Triplett was fleeing, he managed to throw a plastic bag containing a crystalized material-suspected to be methamphetamine.  A clear, plastic bag containing crystalized substance was found in Triplett’s pocket.    PSO S.J. Huffman and K-9 Shrek located several plastic baggies of crystalized substance-suspected to be methamphetamine-inside Triplett’s vehicle.  Numerous, empty baggies were discovered as well, along with: digital scales, a scoop, a glass pipe.  The combined weight of the substances was 44.8 grams, having a street value of $4,500.  Cash was seized from Triplett totaling $478.00.   Burke County Narcotics Task Force is assisting with the investigation.      Triplett was charged with:   Possession with Intent to Manufacture Sell and Deliver Methamphetamine.   Possession of drug paraphernalia   Resist, obstruct and delay public safety officer.   Total bond: $28,000   First appearance is scheduled for May 27, 2014
