Oregon City shooting: Officer Robert Libke's name added to list of fallen officers
The following is a list of law-enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty over the past 25 years as a result of shootings, stabbings, beatings or explosions. It does not include those who have died in traffic accidents, heart attacks or illnesses. Officer Robert Libke, whose death was announced Monday, is the first Oregon City Police Officer to die in the line of duty since 1906.The following is a list of law-enforcement officers who have been killed in the line of duty over the past 25 years as a result of shootings, stabbings, beatings or explosions.  It does not include those who have died in traffic accidents, heart attacks or illnesses.The list was compiled from the Officer Down Memorial Page and The Oregonian archives.Nov. 29, 2011Correctional Officer Buddy Ray Herron, 42, was stabbed to death after apparently stopping to assist at the scene of a single-car accident along Oregon 11, two miles north of Pendleton. Herron had served with the Oregon Department of Corrections for four years.April 22, 2011Officer Christopher Kilcullen, 43,  of the Eugene Police Department was shot and killed after pulling over a woman who had run a red light.  The woman was later arrested by officers from the Springfield Police Department. View full sizeCity of Rainier Jan. 5, 2011Chief of Police Ralph A. Painter, 55, of the Rainier Police Department was shot and killed at a local car stereo shop by a man apparently attempting to steal a car.  Painter had served with the department for 25 years. Dec. 12, 2008Senior Trooper William Robert Hakim, 51, of the Oregon State Police and Captain Tom Tennant, 51, of the Woodburn Police Department were killed when a bomb they were examining exploded.  The bomb had been placed at a Woodburn bank. Hakim was an 11-year veteran of the OSP. Tennant had been with the Woodburn Police for 28 years.Aug. 21, 2003Multnomah County Sheriff’s Deputy Irving Lawrence Burkett, 63, died of injuries he received on July 25, 1982, during an escape attempt from the Rocky Butte Jail.  Burkett had been with the sheriff’s office for 14 years at the time he was shot.Sept. 14, 2002Deputy Sheriff Morris L. Taylor, 38, of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was shot and killed while responding to a report of a man engaged in lewd acts at a motel in Curtin, Ore.  Taylor had been employed in law enforcement for 14 years.Sept. 12, 2000Deputy Sheriff William “Bill” Bowman, 36, of the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, was shot and killed during a SWAT training exercise at Camp Rilea on the Oregon Coast.  Bowman was shot by another officer who thought his weapon had been loaded with blanks. Bowman was a six-year veteran.Jan. 27, 1998Officer Colleen Ann Waibel, 44, of the Portland Police Bureau was shot and killed while attempting to enter a suspected drug house.  Two other officers were wounded.  The suspect was taken into custody after being shot but died while in the hospital.Oct. 2, 1997Sgt. Richard Schuening, 53, of the Oregon State Police was killed while attempting to disarm an explosive device in Granite. Schuening was an 18-year veteran of the OSP.July 21, 1997Officer Thomas Layton Jeffries, 35, of the Portland Police Bureau was shot and killed while trying to arrest a man wanted in connection with the shooting of a 7-year-old.  Jeffries was backing up another officer and was shot as he exited his patrol car.  He returned fire, striking the suspect in the leg, but later died of his wound.Dec. 1, 1994Multnomah County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Ray Anderson, 49, died of injuries he received when shot on March 5, 1969, by a prisoner in his custody. The wound paralyzed Anderson, who had been with the Sheriff’s Office six months at the time of the incident.Sept. 30, 1992Oregon State Police Trooper Bret Robert Clodfelter, 34, was shot and killed while taking a suspected drunk driver to jail.  The assailant was arrested three days later, and eventually sentenced to life in prison.April 8,1992Officer Frank Ward, 39, of the John Day Police Department was beaten to death while responding to a domestic disturbance call.  Ward was trying to prevent Sidney Dean Porter from beating a woman when Porter struck him with a piece of firewood.  Porter was recently denied parole.Jan. 17,1989Department of Corrections director James Michael Francke, 43, was stabbed to death by an ex-convict who was apparently attempting to rob Francke near the Department of Corrections headquarters in Salem.  Francke had been with the department for six years.-- The Oregonian
