Sonia Sotomayor at David Douglas; Gresham-Barlow free speech talk; Parkrose levy: East Multnomah Co
Welcome to this week's roundup of happenings in the school districts of east Portland and east Multnomah County. The caption to the photo is this post has been updated to reflect the correction shown at end.Welcome to this week's roundup of happenings in the school districts of east Portland and east Multnomah County.U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor surprised students and teachers at Fir Ridge alternative high school in the David Douglas School District on Tuesday, making an unannounced stop before a scheduled lecture at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Reporters weren't invited to the event; school officials called it 'hush-hush.' But the district has provided a lengthy account plus photos of Sotomayor's two-hour visit. 'Sotomayor called every student with a question up on stage with her, where she would put her arms around them, sometimes hugging them, posing for a photo, and then responding personally to their question, drawing from her own difficult upbringing and hard-fought climb to the top of the legal world,' the account reads.Speaking of the U.S. Supreme Court, eighth-grade students at Gordon Russell Middle School in the Gresham-Barlow School District expect to meet Monday with Mary Beth Tinker, the plaintiff in the landmark student free speech case Tinker vs. Des Moines. Tinker was just 13 when she helped organize a protest against the Vietnam War in her Iowa school. Her actions got her suspended. But she and others decided to challenge the school's punishment in a case that wound up at the Supreme Court. In 1969, justices ruled that students 'don't shed their constitutional rights at the school house gates.' Meanwhile, school board members in the district are weighing when to go out for another construction bond. A $210 million measure failed in November. However, school board members haven't set a date for a new campaign. 'At the school board retreat on Feb. 28, the board looked at past election data (to include voter turnout) and discussed when might be a good time to go out for another school bond,' wrote Athena Vadnais, district spokeswoman, in an email. 'No decision was made and the district/school board will continually revisit this subject at future planning retreats.' Parkrose School Board members are also in wait-and-see mode. Monday, they heard the results of a recent phone survey that asked Parkrose voters whether they would support a $1 million per year local-option levy. The results weren't positive; 46 percent of respondents said they would oppose such a measure, 38 percent said they would support one and 16 percent said they were not sure. 'A levy is an option we're still interested in looking at,' said Ed Grassel, school board chairman. 'We have some educating to do in our community.' He added: 'We're going to look at 2015.'The Reynolds School Board voted Wednesday to raise Superintendent Linda Florence's salary from $155,000 per year to $160,000. Florence started as Reynolds' superintendent in July 2012. -- Beth Slovic Sonia Sotomayor made an appearance at Fir Ridge, an alternative high school in the David Douglas School District. A caption in the photograph that appeared in an earlier version of this post listed the incorrect location.

Caffe Montecassino's affogato makes gelato a winter-friendly dessert
Over the next week, the Forest Grove Leader will feature a series of articles on comfort foods chosen by cooks and owners at the area's restaurants and cafes. At some point last week, it was a dark and stormy night, and it was likely followed by a wet and bleary morning. That’s winter in Oregon, and locals have learned to accept it. But that doesn’t mean you can’t hunker down and enjoy it.Over the next week, the Forest Grove Leader will feature a series of articles on comfort foods chosen by people at the area’s restaurants and cafes. They range from southern gumbo to gluten-free gravy, so check back often for your latest dinner ideas.Karen Mossbarger, owner of Caffe MontecassinoIce cream might be counterintuitive when winter winds whip outside, but Mossbarger swears by it. Her winter comfort food is affogato, an Italian treat that combines gelato with steaming espresso. She serves it at the cafe at 1932 21st Ave.Mossbarger said she put affogato back on the Caffe Montecassino menu after she bought the cafe in March. It was her favorite item when the cafe opened under the previous owners but had been taken off the menu.Mossbarger buys her gelato from a Portland gelato-maker who is from Florence.“It’s the real, Italian-style gelato,” Mossbarger said. She counts ice cream as one of her comfort foods, and espresso warms it up for the winter. Ingredients:one scoop of gelato (Mossbarger’s favorite is hazelnut)two shots of espressoRecipe: Scoop the gelato into a deep cup or dish.Pour freshly made espresso over it.Enjoy!  --Clare Lennon
