Vella Suzanne Smock Calhoun, 54, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2014, at Sweetwater hospital. The family will have a celebration of Vellas life at a later date. Ziegler Funeral Home has been entrusted with the care of Vella Calhoun.

Obituary for Rev. Ted Baker
Rev. Ted F. Baker passed away Sunday, March 30, 2014. He served in the Ministry for the United Methodist Church for 43 years touching hearts and lives too many to count. Rev. Baker also served at Red Bank United Methodist Church 1993-1998. Upon his official retirement in 2000 he has made his home in Sweetwater, Tenn., and continued to serve and share the love of God daily. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Wallace Baker; his three children and their spouses, son, Butch Baker and wife, Nancy, son, Jay Baker and wife, Tara, and daughter, Sissy Polacek and husband, Adam. He also leaves behind eight much loved grandchildren. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at the First United Methodist Church of Sweetwater. The family will receive friends during visitation immediately following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall. Obituary for Catherine Lane
Catherine Pearl Anderson Lane, 92, of Hixson, entered the eternal Kingdom of heaven on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014. She was born Jan. 7, 1921, in Sweetwater, Tenn., to John Anderson and Emma Kyker Anderson. She attended schools in Niota, Tenn.. Catherine had been a resident of Hamilton County, for more than 70 years. She was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church Chattanooga where she enjoyed teaching 4 and 5 year olds in the Sunday School. Catherine was a loving wife and beloved mother, was a gourmet Tennessee cook and claimed she was born with a spoon in her hand. She enjoyed baking delicious fruit pies and preparing just-harvested, fresh vegetables from her husbands garden. Catherines greatest loves were for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and her family. She was married for over 70 years to James Marshall Lane who preceded her in death along with a son, Gary Marshall Lane. She was the tenth of 12 children and is survived by her sister, Anna Kay Patton; and her brother, Roy Anderson of Athens, Tenn. Catherine is also survived by her son, Charles Edward (Billie) Lane Sr.; and her daughter, Judith Lane Gray; four grandsons, Don (Janye) Gray, Troy Gray, Tim (Cindy) Gray and Charles (Kendall) Lane Jr., of Knoxville; four great-grandsons, Lucas and Jacob Gray, Sebastian Gray and Charles E. Lane III. She had many beloved nieces and nephews in the Chattanooga Athens Sweetwater area as well as many friends. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the North Chapel. A celebration of Catherines life will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 5, at the Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel with Pastor Ken Clark officiating. Grateful and heartfelt thanks are extended to all caregivers and staff members of Standifer Place Hospice of Chattanooga; Dr. Jeremy Bruce, M.D. and Memorial Hospital. Obituary for Leonard Howington
Leonard Howington, 71, of Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, Dec. 15, 2013. He was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Sweetwater Rug Corp. in Ringgold, Ga. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Henry and Frank Howington; sisters, Myrtle Roach and Mattie Lou Hix. Surviving relatives: brothers, Olen Howington Jr., of Chattanooga, Luke Howington, of Harrison, and Raymond Howington, of East Ridge. Graveside services will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday Dec. 18, 2013, at Moore Cemetery (Standifer Gap Road) with Pastor Mike Sims, officiating. Visit to share words of comfort to the family. Obituary for James Chamlee
James A. Chamlee, 92 of East Ridge, passed away Nov. 30, 2013, at the VA Hospice in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Jim was born in Sweetwater, Tenn., March 30, 1921 the son of Richard and Maggie Chamlee. His father died three months prior to his birth and his mother when he was just a child. Following the death of his mother, he was raised by a beloved aunt and uncle, John and Annie Lynn Carter, along with their daughters, Betty Ruth and Joan. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Agnes Wright, Myrtle Morgan, and Grace Hood as well as brothers, William and Richard Chamlee. He is also preceded by John and Annie Lynn Carter, Betty Ruth Woody, Joan Simmons and other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Survivors include nieces, nephews, cousins, valued friends, and a grateful nation. Jim was a decorated World War II veteran serving in the Army from 1940-1945. He participated in numerous campaigns including those in Algeria, Sicily, Northern France, and Normandy. He received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, and the Bronze Star Medal. Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6, in the East chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 S. Moore Road with Dr. John W. Burkett officiating. Visitation will be from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Friday. Burial will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery. Obituary for Mary Ruth Kyle
Mary Ruth Kyle, 89, of Red Bank, formerly of Sweetwater, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday Nov. 30, 2013, at Wood Presbyterian Home. She was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church for many years, at one time she was very active with the ladies quilting group. She attended Edmonds Business College in Chattanooga; she retired from Decosims and Co. after many years of service as an accountant. Preceded in death by her parents, George and Mattie Kyle; four brothers and three sisters. Survivors include her sisters, Sue Walker, of Sweetwater, Leona Tyler, of Lenoir City, Patricia Milburn, of Chattanooga; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby Joe and Frances Kyle, Amos Dean and Shirley Kyle, all of Sweetwater; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service was at 7 p.m. Monday in Kyker's Chapel with Dr. Gerald Atkins officiating. Interment 11 a.m. today in Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, 514 Pleasant Hill Road, Philadelphia, TN 37846. Kyker Funeral Homes, Sweetwater, in charge of arrangements.
