Jon Raine Tate: 1934-2014
Jon Raine Tate, a retired educator and servant leader, who dedicated his life to his family and profession and shared his kindness with students, friends, coworkers and greater community alike, left us on April 1, 2014 in Georgetown, Texas. His presence was a gift to all of us and his departure a reminder to all who met him of the beauty of a gracious man, a man of wisdom and a true Texan. During his lifetime, he held the fondest of memories as a deacon, teacher, coach, principal, superintendent, Associate Director of Texas Association of Community Schools (TACS), Field Service Director for the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) and a Board Member for Education Service Center, Region 13.  And now, it is us who take time to reflect on all that he was and meant to each of us. Born in Houston, Texas, at Hermann Hospital on August 26, 1934 to Robert Clyde (Cy) and Imogen Raine Tate, Jon attended his entire elementary and high school years in Crystal City, Texas; thereafter, attending the University of Texas and subsequently receiving a football and baseball scholarship to Sul Ross University, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in 1956, followed by a Master of Education degree from Abilene Christian University. For three years, Eastland, Texas was his home where he not only taught and coached football, but where he met the love of his life (and she hers), Joann Durham Tate, his wife of 54 years.   Thereafter, they moved to Clyde, Texas where Jon so enjoyed a wonderful time in his life as head football coach.  He always had a fond place in his heart for Clyde students and all the people who came into his life. Jon became high school principal in Albany, then Superintendent in: Baird for three years, Hale Center for three years, Sweeny for six years, and Llano for four years.   While in Round Rock for 10 years, he worked as Associate Director, TACS and Field Service Director, TASB.  In each of his communities, Jon served as a deacon and/or sang in the church choir. Jon’s professional affiliations (TACS, TASA, TASB and TSTA- Texas State Teachers Association) and the Lion’s Club came with recognitions of his accomplishments (that he humbly accepted), to include but not limited to:  Citizen of the Year, Hale Center and Public Relations award from Education Service Center, Region 4, Houston. He and Joann retired together in Georgetown as members of the First Baptist Church.  As we might have suspected, one of the ministers described Jon as “one of a few true gentlemen in this world”.  With that we all agree. Jon is preceded in death by his children: Jonny and his two premature daughters, Gena Allene and Nanci Dee; parents, Cy and Imogen Tate; uncles and aunts: Randolph and Edith Raine and Macon and Dottie Raine; brother, Bob Cy and sister-in-law Bee Tate; and friends: Carol Williams and Kenneth Welsch. Jon will always be remembered by his many friends and those who survive him:  loving wife, Joann Durham Tate; brother, Larry and his wife Becky; nieces: Shelly Holt, Karen Crandall, Julia Lawrence, Stefanie Janicek, Susie Guven, and Shannon Tankersley; and nephews: Jeff, David and Mike Tate, Mark Crandall, and Charlie Wolford. A time of visitation was held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014 in the Chapel of Ramsey Funeral Home. The Funeral Service began at 11:00 a.m., following the time of visitation, at Ramsey Funeral Home. Interment was held following the service at Austin Memorial Park Cemetery, next to his three beautiful children, 2800 Hancock Drive, Austin, Texas 78731. Memorials may be made in Jon’s honor to the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org). You may share a message or memory in the memorial guestbook at www.RamseyFuneral.com.  Read Article.1 photo attached to this article.More from Obituaries.
