OPEN PUBLIC RECORDS

Because You Need to Know

How to use this page: Harris County is the third-largest county in the United States, with more than 4.7 million residents and over 30 incorporated cities including Houston, Pasadena, Baytown, Humble, and Katy. Records are split across multiple offices: the District Clerk handles felony and civil court records; the County Clerk handles property records, marriage licenses, and probate; the Sheriff's Office handles arrests and the jail; the District Attorney prosecutes criminal cases. This page tells you which office holds what.

How to Request Records

Most records are handled by different offices — always contact the office listed in the section above.

Online: District Court records use the District Clerk case search. Property and vital records use the County Clerk site. Statewide court records via re:SearchTX.

In person: Visit the appropriate office at 201 Caroline (Civil Courthouse) or 1201 Franklin (Criminal Justice Center) in downtown Houston. Bring a valid photo ID.

By mail or email: Submit a written request under the Texas Public Information Act. Include your name, contact information, and a clear description of the records. Send to the office that holds the records — District Clerk for court records, County Clerk for property/vital, Sheriff for incident reports, DA for prosecution files. Agencies must respond within 10 business days.

What this page does not show: Not all records are available online. Some require a written request, an in-person visit, or a fee. Court records and arrest data may be incomplete, delayed, or not yet entered into online systems. Records held by individual cities (police reports from Houston PD, Pasadena PD, etc.) are separate from county records — contact the city directly for those.

This page is a guide to help you find official records — it is not the official database. All information comes from government sources. Verify details directly with the agency that holds the records.
