How Records Work in New Hampshire

New Hampshire's court and arrest records run across state, county, and municipal levels — with the municipal level unusually important. The state judiciary under the New Hampshire Supreme Court maintains court records through the Case Access system. NH State Police Criminal Records Unit holds statewide criminal history. Most local records — deeds, marriage licenses, Superior Court filings — are held at the county level, while vital records and many other town-level records sit with the 234 cities and towns.

New Hampshire has 10 counties. Each has its own Superior Court, Register of Deeds, Sheriff, and County Attorney (New Hampshire uses County Attorneys rather than District Attorneys for most criminal prosecutions — a historical feature distinct from most states). The Circuit Court's statewide unified structure simplifies searches at the lower court level: one court, three divisions, statewide coverage.

What this page does not show: Not every record is online. Some case types have limited public access. Many vital and town-level records live at the city or town clerk's office rather than the county. When in doubt, call the agency directly.

This page is a guide to help you find official records — it is not the official database. All information comes from government sources. Verify details directly with the agency that holds the records.
